The evangelical church is hemorrhaging. Over 40 million Americans have dechurched in the last 25 years alone, and multiple generations have been raised to believe the most spiritual thing they can do is follow God by following their heart – right out of the church. Yet, this shift is happening right as society is hitting record levels of loneliness, stress, and anxiety. In The Reason for Church, pastor Brad Edwards connects the dots of our current church crisis and provides compelling reasons to come back.
The Reason for Church offers an honest-yet-hopeful vision for church as a necessary institution. With radical individualism tearing us apart, we need compelling reasons to fall back in love with Christ’s bride, now more than ever.

]]>This weeks giveaway is sponsored by B&H Publishing. They are giving away 3 sets of the Holman Handbook Series. Each set will include the Old Testament Handbook, New Testament Handbook, and the forthcoming Church History Handbook.
Why is history important? Most people rarely pause to consider this. Perhaps without realizing it, some have been conditioned to esteem the study of history as legitimate for reasons they cannot identify. Maybe it’s for the sake of preserving the human legacy for posterity. Maybe it’s because of a sense of patriotism and heritage for a given country or culture. Or maybe it’s mainly for the sake of meeting societal standards of what it means to be an educated and well-rounded individual. Many, however, will cite the famous George Santayana quote: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
While there is some validity to these reasons, we as Christians should approach the study of the past with an even more reverent mindset. If God is the Creator and Sustainer of the world, then he is also Lord of history, the one who declares “the end from the beginning and from long ago what is not yet done” and who says, “My plan will take place, and I will do all my will” (Isa 46:10). In short, history is coherent and meaningful because of God.
The history of the church is both the history of God’s faithfulness and the history of our waywardness, much like the history of Israel that we find in the OT. Though beyond the book of Acts we do not possess a supernaturally inspired record of the church’s “warts and all” experiences and contributions, we nonetheless can learn from the records we have by measuring them according to Scripture. We will make mistakes like those who came before us, but the same God who preserved His people in the past will continue to preserve His people into the future.
Accordingly, the contents of the Church History Handbook are intended to serve as a means to the end that is the Great Commission, namely, the preservation and empowerment of God’s people for their God-given mission of proclaiming the truth of the gospel to the world. By equipping the church in the present to learn from her past, we set her up to remain faithful into the future. As we study church history, may God be glorified in the church throughout all generations.
“Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us—to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Eph 3:20–21).
To celebrate the release of the Church History Handbook, we would like to give away three sets of the Holman Handbook Series. Enter for your chance to win a 3-volume set of the Holman Handbook Series including the Old Testament, New Testament, and Church History Handbooks. The three winners will receive their copies once the Church History Handbook becomes available for shipping (after 4/15/25). Entries are limited to North America.

A Modern Commentary Steeped in Ancient Tradition
The Christian Standard Commentary (CSC) aims to embody an “ancient-modern” approach to each volume in the series. This approach seeks to balance the strengths of the modern commentary tradition with the lesser known, and highly beneficial, dynamics of the ancient commentary tradition, bringing together the old and new to give a biblically derived and theologically rich commentary steeped in history.
The CSC affirms the traditional features of a modern commentary providing verse-by-verse exegesis, studying the texts historical-grammatical context, and exploring the unique literary dimensions of the biblical books. However, it is especially marked by a theological bent regarding biblical interpretation. This bent recognizes that the Bible is not only a historical or literary document but is fundamentally the Word of God. It recognizes Scripture as both historical and theological. God is the primary speaker in Scripture, and readers must deal with Him.
Theological interpretation affirms that although God enabled many authors to write the books of the Bible (Heb 1:1), He is the divine author, the subject matter of Scripture, and the One who gives the Old and New Testaments to the church, the people of God, to facilitate her growth for her good (2 Tim 3:16–17). Theological interpretation reads Scripture as God’s address to His people because God gives Scripture to His people to be heard and lived. Any other approach (whether historical, literary, or otherwise) that diminishes emphasis on theological interpretation stands deficient before the demands of the text.
Common to Christian biblical interpretation in the past two millennia (e.g., patristic, medieval, reformation, or modern) is a vision of Scripture in which Scripture is read with attention to divine activity, truth, and relevance to the people of God. The ancient commentary tradition interprets Scripture as a product of complex and rich divine action. God has stepped into history and given his Word to his people so that they may know, love, and glorify Him, and proclaim His praises to all creation, leading to spiritual and practical transformation.
The Christian Standard Commentary will encourage and equip God’s people to understand the text and live according to Scripture for Christ’s glory. The unique ancient-modern approach to the biblical text found in the CSC is a valuable resource for building up Christ’s church while encouraging God’s people to fulfill the Great Commission. As a commentary series written with Christ’s church in mind, the CSC is a valuable tool for the shelves of pastors, scholars, and any student of Scripture.
Enter for your chance to win a 7-volume set of the Christian Standard Commentary series including the following titles: Genesis 1-11, Isaiah 1-39, Habakkuk, Acts, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, 1 & 2 Peter and Jude. Entries are limited to North America.

Are you wondering how you can help lead the children growing up in your church or home to a saving faith in Christ?
Zealous, written by Truth78 executive director David Michael, is for parents and ministry leaders, and anyone who wants to be inspired with biblical vision and practical guidance to disciple the next generation with purpose, confidence, and zeal.
David served for nearly 30 years as a pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church with John Piper, where the zeal and theological commitments for this book were formed. In Zealous, he describes a fervor and diligence for discipleship that is born out of a passion for God and His glory. He then presents seven commitments that provide a vision and framework for the discipleship of the next generation:
Truth78 is offering a free e-book or audiobook of Zealous to encourage you in your efforts for the faith of the next generation.
From the introduction:
Deep down, we wonder. We give them a Bible, teach them the truth, ask penetrating questions, lead them in prayer, affirm the good, confront the sin, provide a good example to follow, help them find good friends–but deep down we wonder if what we are doing is working. They read the Bible and even memorize parts of it. They claim to believe the truth, give good answers to our questions, pray the prayer, do good things, admit their sin, follow our example, have good friends—but deep down we wonder if the fruit we are seeing will last.
The seven commitments described in this book can provide a helpful framework for you as you raise up the next generation, in the hope that they would have steadfast confidence in God and belong wholly to Jesus Christ forever.
As parents, teachers, and ministry leaders, may we be passionate about faithfully teaching the next generation the glorious deeds of the Lord so that they will “set their hope in God” (Psalm 78:7).

]]>This week’s Free Stuff Friday is sponsored by Thomas Nelson Bibles. They are giving away five copies of the Life in Christ Bible.
About the Life in Christ Bible:
Identity is all the rage today, and that’s kind of a good thing because when you think about it, identity is foundational to the gospel. The gospel is about us understanding our identity as sinners separated from God, and then us understanding Jesus’s identity as the Son of God and the rescuer from sin. Then it’s us experiencing a new identity in Christ.
The Life in Christ Bible is designed to walk you through these three related major aspects of your identity. With over notes and articles, it will show you that identity is a key theme that runs from Genesis all the way through Revelation.
The first major category is knowing my identity as an image bearer. Here you’ll find eight core concepts that are true of you and everyone else, believer and unbeliever alike. Your identity as an image bearer is what gives you an ending worth.
The second major category is knowing my identity in Christ. Here you’ll find 17 core changes that become true of you the moment you’ve placed your faith in Jesus. These, coupled with the unchanging marks of being an image bearer is what gives you the value that God gives you when he made you.
The third major category is living my identity in Christ. Here you’ll find 15 core conducts identity drives, behavior, who we are, frames what we do, and the difference your identity in Christ can and should prompt in your everyday living is what these are all about.
We hope that the Life in Christ Bible gets God’s truth of your identity deeper into your mind and heart and gives you greater confidence and joy in who God made you to be.
